Walk into any mattress shop in India and you will hear the same four words: single, double, queen, king. The trouble is that nobody agrees on what they mean. A queen in one showroom is a double in the next. Order by name and there is a real chance the mattress arrives two inches too wide for your bed frame.
The fix is simple. Ignore the name. Order by the numbers.
How Indian mattress sizes are written
An Indian mattress size is almost always written as length x width, in inches. So 75x60 means 75 inches long and 60 inches wide. The thickness is quoted separately, also in inches.
At Mattressoo we make 20 standard sizes, from 72x30 up to 84x72. Here is roughly how the common names map onto the widths:
| Width | Usually called | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 30 or 36 inches | Single | One person, children's rooms, guest beds |
| 48 inches | Double | Two people at a squeeze, or one person with room to move |
| 60 inches | Queen | Two adults, the most common choice in Indian homes |
| 66 or 72 inches | King | Two adults with space, or a couple with a small child |
Lengths run 72, 75, 78 and 84 inches. If you are over six feet tall, 72 inches will feel short — your feet will hang off. Go for 78 or 84.
Measure the frame, not the old mattress
This is where most people go wrong. An old mattress sags and spreads at the edges, so measuring it gives you the wrong number. Measure the inside of the bed frame instead — the actual space the new mattress has to drop into.
Measure it twice, at both ends. Wooden frames are rarely perfectly square, and a difference of an inch between the head and foot is common. Use the smaller number.
If your frame falls between two of our sizes, take the smaller one. A mattress that is slightly small sits fine. A mattress that is slightly large bows in the middle and wears unevenly.
How thick should it be?
Thickness is about body weight and the kind of support you want, not about luxury.
- 4 inch — guest rooms, children, floor use, or a thin layer over an existing hard base
- 5 to 6 inch — the right range for most adults and most bed frames
- 8 inch — heavier builds, or anyone who wants a deeper, more cushioned feel
Our TrueOrtho Smart Series comes in 4, 5 and 6 inch. The OrthoCare Hybrid and Ultra Reversible come in 5, 6 and 8 inch.
One thing to check before you decide: if your bed has a storage box or a raised lip, a thicker mattress may sit higher than the lip and slide around. Measure the lip height too.
Two people, two different preferences
If one of you likes a firmer surface and the other does not, a wider mattress helps more than you would expect. On a 60 inch queen, movement on one side carries across. On a 72 inch king it mostly does not.
Memory foam also helps here, because it absorbs movement rather than passing it along. If your partner gets up at 5 am and you do not want to know about it, that matters more than firmness.
Still not sure?
Take our mattress finder — six questions and it will point you to one of the three. Or pick your size and thickness directly on any mattress product page and the price updates as you choose.
